International Day of the Girl

indexToday is the International Day of the Girl Child, a day created in In 2011 by the United Nations General Assembly’s Resolution 66/170, “to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.” The theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl is “Innovating for Girls’ Education”.

If you are curious about the importance of girls’ education around the world, especially in places that do not have full or equal access to primary or secondary education, watch an interview with the inspiring Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teen who became an outspoken activist for when the Taliban banned school for girls. She is such an incredible young woman that the term “girl” almost seems out of place – at 16 she’s received and been nominated for international awards, authored a book, not to mention survived an assassination attempt.  While there are many interviews of Ms. Yousafzai available on the web, I find the interview with comedian Jon Stewart especially moving, as he changes tone from his usual wit to pure admiration.
